“God is Holy; you are not, so repent”

1Peter 1:13-16

Pastor Dunlop

“We live in an unholy age – our world can be defined as unholy. We are influenced every day by an unholy culture. Un-holiness has become the norm in our lives – it has caused true Holiness to seem extreme or strange. Tonight, we need to understand that God wants us to live Holy lives – He commands it! It is His standard for living.

To get an accurate view of just how Holy God is and how unholy we are – and how Holy we THINK we are – Let’s look at a few examples in the Bible.

John, though we would revere him as a Holy man of God, said this: ‘When I saw Him, I fell upon my face as dead.’ John was utterly undone before a Holy God.

Job, though he ‘feared God and eschewed evil’, said this when confronted with God’s Holiness: ‘I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes’.

When Isaiah saw the Lord, he humbled himself and said, ‘Woe is me, for I am undone!’.

Ezra had ‘purposed in his heart to seek after the Lord’, and still trembled before God’s Holiness.

Moses was chosen to lead the children of Israel out of bondage. He walked with God; still, when confronted with God’s Holiness he removed his shoes at the realization of God’s Holiness filling the ground he walked upon.

The fact of the matter is, the more we get a vision of God, the less we are tempted to lift up ourselves. We need to understand our position before a Holy God. Oh, that we could somehow catch a glimpse of the Holiness of God! Our lives would be changed completely. To see God’s Holiness is also to see my lowliness – my worthlessness without Him. When we see God for who we is, we will finally see ourselves for who we really are, and hopefully it will lead us to get right with a Holy God.

God is Holy; you are not, so repent.”
